Understanding the basics of why we need git and how to get started with it as a student
Significance
This talk gave me the opportunity to go back (remotely) to the college I completed by bachelor's degree from and conduct a seminar for the current students in the presence of my college professors.
Motivation
All the while I was in college, our "version control" was pen-drives and emails. At the time this seemed like an okay thing to do since we didn't know any better way to do this. But the moment I started my first job, I realised how much the tech industry relies on git and how we are assumed to know git already. Disappointingly, this was never part of our education system for IT students and it still isn't.
Since then, I wanted to go back to college and talk about this. Fortunately, the opportunity served itself when one of my ex-professor got in touch with me for conducting a session. It was a no-brainer for me that I'm going to talk about Git and help the students figure out how they can use this for their college projects for better collaboration with each other and prepare them for the world of tech.
